On Thursday, a murder arrest warrant was issued for the 14-year-old stepdaughter of a Warren County woman found dead in her home Monday, and an arrest was made in the shooting a of high school student found dead in the city on the same day.

This morning, the search was still on for 14-year-old Tyla Denise Vega in the shooting death of 32-year-old Michelle Vega at the home they shared with their family on Jones Road in south Warren County.

Investigators said Tyla is a light-skinned bi-racial female, about 5-foot-6 and weighing about 140 pounds. She was last seen wearing a black and white shirt and pink, black and white shorts and has medium-length wavy black hair.

Neighbors told investigators Tyla left the home in the family’s tan 2002 Dodge Durango, with Mississippi tag WBD 139, minutes before Michelle Vega’s 15-year-old son, Wesley White, came in from school and found his mother dead.

A weapon found at the home has been sent to the Mississippi State Crime Lab to determine if it was used in the killing.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace asked that anyone with any information on the whereabouts of Tyla Vega or the Durango contact the Warren County Sheriff’s Office at 601-636-1761 or Central Mississippi Crime Stoppers.

In the second shooting death reported on Monday, Vicksburg police arrested Corey Thompson, 25, 4880 U.S. 80, at 6:10 p.m. at River Region Medical Center and charged him with two counts of armed robbery and capital murder for the shooting death of Maurice Morris, 18, whose body was found at the Confederate Ridge Apartments, Vicksburg police Sgt. Sandra Williams said.

The capital murder charge stems from Thompson’s being accused of committing a crime in the commission of a felony, Williams said.

He is accused of attempting to rob Jermaine Wright, 26, a resident of the complex, and Patrick Tucker, 23, 2106 Baker St., Sunday night in the parking lot of the apartment complex.

The attempted robbery resulted in a shootout and the death of Morris. Wright and Tucker told police that Thompson and Morris each fired shotguns at them during the attempted robbery in the parking lot, Vicksburg police Lt. Bobby Stewart said.

Wright told police he retrieved a pistol from his car and fired back, Stewart said.

Multiple shots were fired, and police do not believe Thompson shot Morris, Stewart said.

Thompson and Morris’ “actions leading up to the shooting caused the death of Morris,” he said. “It is unclear who shot at who first, but tests are being conducted.”

A shotgun and a pistol were recovered Sunday night and a second shotgun was recovered Monday morning, Stewart said.

A capital murder conviction carries the death penalty.

Thompson, who had been at River Region Medical Center, where he was being treated for a gunshot wound to the abdomen, remained in the hospital this morning, Stewart said.

A Vicksburg Police Department patrol officer is manning Thompson’s room while he is under hospital care. He will be processed into the Warren County Jail after he is released from the hospital, Williams said.

Morris was wearing a mask when his body was found Monday morning about 50 yards from the shooting scene.
