St. Al, Vicksburg girls shine at region meets

The St. Aloysius Lady Flashes and Vicksburg Missy Gators both continued their march toward the MHSAA state meet.
St. Al won six events and qualified for next week’s Class 1A South State meet in a dozen, all while finishing second in the team standings Saturday at the Region 4-1A meet.
Alyssa Engel won the long jump and triple jump, and joined Grace Burnett, Claire Jamison and Dede Apenyo on the winning 4×400 meter relay team.
Olivia Curtis won the high jump, Maggie Waites the pole vault, and Eden Engler the 3,200 meters.
Engel also finished second in the 200 meters, and Waites was fourth in the 100 meters.
Other qualifiers for the South State meet were Tori Thomas (shot put, discus); Madalyn Burke (1,600 meters); and the 4×200 meter relay team of Apenyo, Burnett, Laura Phillips and Mary Ranager.
In the Region 2-5A meet, Vicksburg’s 4×100 meter relay team of Mikayla Banks, Destiny Allen, Tymesha Nabors and Keiyana Gaskin set a meet record with a time of 48.58 seconds to win the event.
Nabors also won in the 300-meter hurdles, Breanna Foy was first in the long jump and third in the triple jump, and Gaskin was second in both the 100 and 200 meters.
Other qualifiers for the North State meet were Jade Douglas (400 meters); Lakeria Tubbs (high jump); the 4×200 meter relay team of Allen, Nabors, Tyra Prentiss and Jamia Sanders; and the 4×400 meter relay team of Lily Brown, Douglas, Banks and Sanders.
