A total of 16 Key Club members from Vicksburg High School and Porters Chapel will receive scholarships from the Vicksburg Kiwanis Club.
The students were selected Tuesday by Kiwanis Club members. Their names will be announced at a later date, club president Georgia Grodowitz said. She added the scholarships range from $250 to $1,250. The bulk of the scholarship money is raised through the Kiwanis Clubs’ annual Chili Feast.
Sponsored by Kiwanis Clubs, Key Clubs are high school service organizations which work with the Kiwanians on community service projects. The Vicksburg Kiwanis Club sponsors the VHS and Porters Chapel clubs.
Sixteen students applied for the scholarships, which are given annually to senior students who are Key Club members.
To qualify, students must have been a Key Club member for at least two years, be a graduating senior, intend to enroll in a four-year college, university, community college, vocational or technical college, and a 2.75 or better grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.
Students fill out an application, attach a copy of their high school transcript, include and essay on the value of volunteer service and how they plan to be a part of future service.
The type of scholarship they receive is evaluated by members based on need, their record and number of hours of volunteer service, and their essay.
