The Vicksburg Warren Athletic Association is in the process of looking for an alternate field to resume their recreation baseball games.

The association’s games are usually played at Halls Ferry Park, but storm damage to the field has caused them to shut down activities until the field is repaired, causing them to seek other parks to continue gameplay.

City parks and recreation director Joe Graves said the park is closed until further notice as adjustors for the city’s insurance carrier can tour the park and make their assessment.

Mayor George Flaggs Jr. said the city would not seek a disaster declaration from the state, adding officials are letting the city’s insurance carrier cover the damage.

South Ward Aldermen Willis Thompson, who is over the city’s recreation program, said the adjustors were due to visit the park later this week.

“Due to the damage, we had to cancel four nights of games from last week and one game this week,” said Marty Boyd, President of The Vicksburg Warren Athletic Association.

Boyd said that crews went to the field on Monday to assess the damages so that repairs could be made immediately.

Boyd said that if they can find another field to resume their games, then the league would pick up where they left off next week.

Halls Ferry Park was in the path of an EF-1 tornado that hit Vicksburg April 28 and caused damage along a 4-mile path through the southern and eastern part of the city.

“We have fences down and light poles down at the ball fields and the tennis courts,” Graves said. “We have limbs and branches down across the park. Right now, it’s too hazardous for anyone to get in there.”

He said nearby Bazinsky Field, which is east of Halls Ferry Park, was not damaged by the twister. He said city officials are also awaiting the arrival of city street department crews, which were still cleaning storm debris in other areas of the city Monday.
