Fires destroyed one home and heavily damaged another Monday in Vicksburg.
A blaze destroyed the home of Katy Thomas, 316-A Lake Hill Drive, Monday night, Vicksburg fire investigator Leslie Sanders said.
Eight people including Thomas, her disabled brother and a 10-year-old child were in the home when it caught fire at about 8:20 p.m., Sanders said. No one was injured.
“The main thing is everyone made it out safe,” Sanders said.
The fire is believed to be accidental and started in an electrical panel box before spreading into the attic, Sanders said.
“It’s a total loss,” she said.
Thomas had fire insurance, Sanders said.
Earlier in the day, fire heavily damaged the home of a mother and her four children on Adams Lane.
The home of Tabitha Tate at 1114 Adams Lane caught fire at about 11:45 a.m. Monday. No one was injured in the blaze. Neither Tate nor her four children were at home when the fire started.
“That’s all I’ve got,” Tate said. “That’s where my kids and I lay out head down.”
Tate, who had lived in the rental home on Adams Lane between Adams and Locust streets since January, did not have fire insurance.
The fire started in the living room of the home before spreading into the ceiling and attic, Sanders said. The home suffered 50 percent damage, Sanders said.
The cause of the fire on Adams Lane is still under investigation.
