First batch of personalized bricks placed

Three dozen bricks purchased in a fundraising drive begun last fall by Vicksburg Main Street are in place near Grove and Levee streets.
The 4-by-8 inch, red-clay mementos along the Yazoo & Mississippi Valley Depot museum walkway are inscribed with names of people, families and businesses who paid $50 to personalize space downtown. City crews installed the bricks earlier this week after each was positioned, city landscape chief Jeff Richardson said.
Names on the 36 bricks now in the ground include those of Mayor George Flaggs and former mayor Joe Loviza, among others.
The downtown development group launched the effort after projected revenue for 2014 from a special millage that funds its activities fell short by $15,550 compared to last year. Main Street also receives a supplement from the city. Special assessments on property within the downtown taxing district equal 5.05 mills and were expected to hit about $28,000 this year.
Additional bricks are planned closer to Washington Street once space fills near the depot, Main Street executive director Kim Hopkins has said. People wanting to buy a brick can call Main Street at 601-634-4527 for more information and to get an order form.
