Despite Saturday’s rain, Mathew Mixon was happy about the youth swimmers’ interest in competing in the swim meet.
“The rain almost got us, but that didn’t stop the swimmers from wanting to carry on with their day,” said Mixon, who is the Director of the Vicksburg Swim Association.
About 200 people gathered at Vicksburg City Pool to watch 250 swimmers ages 7 through 17 from Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana and Texas compete in the Vicksburg Swim Association’s annual Stamm Invitational Swim Meet.
The Vicksburg Swim Association was founded in 1972. Over the years this team has had many state champions and Mississippi Swimming record holders. Parents have supported Mississippi Swimming by serving on its board. The team has recruited members for years by focusing on swimming as a lifetime skill.
Mixon was pleased with the turnout of the event.
“The swim meet was great. The turnout was bigger than I expected. The kids did an amazing job.”
Mixon was glad to see the swimmers take advantage of a great opportunity. He mentioned how much the swimmers from Vicksburg had improved their craft.
“It is good to see them come out and put the pool to good use. They showed lots of growth with their new abilities. I could tell that they had been practicing because they were swimming faster than usual.”
