Martha Brady Lum, 90, died Sunday, July 20, 2014, after a lengthy illness at The Hill, where she lived with her son, daughter-in-law, and six grandchildren in Port Gibson.

Although a native of Jefferson County, Mrs. Lum was a lifetime resident of Port Gibson.

She was a passionate leader of numerous genealogical and historical organizations. She is most lovingly remembered for her leadership at the national and state levels in the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution; organizing chairman, Nathanial Jefferies Society, Children of the American Revolution, which had an entry enrollment of 150, the largest entry enrollment in the history of the CAR; past resident, Claiborne County Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy; and Rosalie State Board of Management, Natchez. Other memberships included Pilgrimage Garden Club of Natchez, Claiborne County Historical Society, Mississippi Historical Society, Colonial Dames of America, Daughters of the Barons of Runnemede, First Families of Mississippi, and Magna Carter Dames.

Mrs. Lum was listed in “Who’s Who of American Women,” “Two Thousand Women of Achievement,” “Personalities of the South, Claiborne County Chapter,” Women for Constitutional Government, National Society, and Americans of Royal Descent.

Through the efforts of Mrs. Lum and her husband, Bill, Temple Gemiluth Chassed, the oldest synagogue in Mississippi, was saved from the wrecking ball. At their home, Oak Square, Martha and Bill Lum meticulously restored and furnished Oak Square B&B beyond its former glory.  Mrs. Lum loved getting to know celebrities and guests she entertained from all points of the globe.

Martha Lum raised a family of four.  To those who knew her, she was good hearted and skilled in diplomacy.  Mrs. Lum will be remembered and missed by many in the Vicksburg-Jackson-Natchez-Port Gibson region.

Mrs. Lum was preceded in death by her beloved husband William Douglas Lum Sr.; her son, Albert Brady Lum; and daughter, Deborah Ker Lum Purviance.

She is survived by two children, Sandra (Ronald) Knellinger of Ridgeland, and Doug (Deborah) Lum of Port Gibson; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 24, 2014, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Port Gibson. The visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the hour of the service. Interment will follow at Wintergreen Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Brady Lum, Brett Lum, Ronald Knellinger, Lael Lum, Erastus Lum, and Douglas Lum.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Tom Bowen, Roy Wilkerson, Marion Smith, David Dowell, Dr. David Headley, Clinton Bagley, Ken Parks, Elbert Hilliard, and Ken P’Poole.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Port Gibson.
