Forty-nine employers from the public and private sectors plan to set up tables at Vicksburg’s 16th Area Job Fair set for Tuesday.
Casinos, food service, health care and law enforcement are represented on the list of entities that will set up tables at the Vicksburg Convention Center starting at 9 a.m. Applications and, in many cases, job offers will go on until 2 p.m.
The Governor’s Job Fair Network of Mississippi conducts the event. Last year’s event drew 1,100 applicants to 61 employers’ tables. Fair organizers reported 279 interviews and 394 job offers. The crowd was smaller than fairs in 2009 and ’10 that took place at the height of the Great Recession.
Mississippi unemployment climbed in June to 8.7 percent, up from a revised 8 percent in May. In Warren County, the jobless rate was 9.5 percent, up from 8.8 percent. MDES attributed the higher rate statewide to students entering the labor force. Figures for July are expected later this month.
