YMCA football registration open

The Vicksburg YMCA is now accepting registration for its youth football, flag football and cheerleading programs.

The youth football program will have two divisions, for players in grades 3-4 and another in grades 5-6. Flag football is for children in kindergarten through second grade.

Flag football season begins Sept. 3, and the youth football and cheer seasons on Sept. 16. Games will be played at the Purks and VerBeck YMCA branches.

VSO registration for fall season

Registration for the Vicksburg Soccer Organization’s fall season will continue until Aug. 24. The registration fee is $60 for players ages 4-6, $80 for players ages 7 and 8, $85 for players ages 9 and 10, and $90 for all players 12 and up.

Greer wins one-man scramble

Leighton Greer shot a 61 to win the one-man scramble Aug. 15 at Clear Creek Golf Course. Matt Hossley and James Comans both shot 66s to finish second and third, respectively, and Jim Darnell was fourth with a 67.

Other flight winners were Scotty Clark and David Vantrease. A total of 38 players participated in the tournament, which benefited course improvements at Clear Creek.

Parks and Rec fall baseball

Registration for the Vicksburg Parks and Recreation Department’s fall baseball season will continue until Sept. 12. The registration fee is $25, and the league is for players ages 5-15. Coaches are also needed.

Parks and Rec adult softball

Registration for the Vicksburg Parks and Recreation Department’s co-ed softball league will continue until Sept. 12. The league is for both men and women, and the registration fee is $175 per team. There is an extra fee of $10 for each Warren County resident and $20 for residents of Claiborne, Sharkey and Issaquena counties. Registration packets are available at the Parks and Rec office on Army Navy Drive.

There will be a mandatory coaches meeting Aug. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Parks and Rec office.

Vicksburg, WC football ticket sales

Tickets for Vicksburg High and Warren Central football games are now on sale. Tickets are $7 per game, or $35 for the season.

Gator and Viking A-Club memberships are also on sale. A-Club membership cards are good for admission to all regularly scheduled sporting events within the Vicksburg Warren School District, with the exception of varsity football, Red Carpet Bowl events, and playoff games. A-Club memberships cost $100 for one person, or $175 for two people.

Gator Bait triathlon

The annual Gator Bait triathlon will be held Aug. 23 at Eagle Lake. The event will start from Messina Landing at 7 a.m., and will include a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-kilometer bike race, and a 10-kilometer run. A running and biking duathlon will also be held, along with an open water swim.

Central Mississippi Rebel Club meeting

The Central Mississippi Ole Miss Rebel Club will host its Fall Kickoff Meeting on Aug. 21 at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in Jackson. Chuck Rounsaville, publisher of “Ole Miss Spirit” magazine, will be the featured speaker. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the main program will start at 6:30.

Southern Miss fan appreciation lunch

The Southern Miss Department of Athletics will host to its second annual Football Season Ticket Holder Appreciation Lunch Saturday in the south end zone of Roberts Stadum. The gates will open at 11 a.m., and the event will run until 1 p.m.

Free hot dogs and hamburgers, as well as soft drinks, will be provided for the first 500 season ticket holders. There will also be inflatable jumps from noon to 1 p.m., music, and a chance to watch the final portion of the Golden Eagles’ practice. I

Director of Athletics Bill McGillis and head football coach Todd Monken will also address the crowd.
