Portions of Mississippi 465 in Warren and Issaquena counties will be closed as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers works to complete a Mississippi River levee enlargement project.
“This work will necessitate the temporary closing of portions of Highway 465 to all through traffic,” Alice Bufkin, a Corps of Engineers spokesman said in an e-mail.
The levee roadway near Albermarle Lake and Goose Lake Road will be barricaded on the south end at intersection of Goose Lake Road and Mississippi 465 and on the north end it will be barricaded where the highway ramps up onto the Mississippi River Levee, Bufkin said.
Another area of the project is near Lake Chotard and Laney’s Boat Camp. Removal of the road service began there Tuesday.
“In coordination with the Mississippi Department of Transportation, local traffic only will be maintained around the work areas. Signage will be posted to alert through traffic of closure of Highway 465,” Bufkin said.
Road work is expected to be completed by fall, and the levee project is scheduled to be completed in approximately one year.
The Vicksburg District encompasses a 68,000-square-mile area across portions of Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana that holds seven major river basins and incorporates approximately 460 miles of mainline levees.
Flood damage risk reduction is the primary mission of Vicksburg District’s four Mississippi lakes, backwater levees and structures. Since its inception, the Mississippi River and tributaries flood risk reduction projects have cumulatively prevented approximately $612 billion of flood damage, Bufkin said.
