Hot temperatures remained over Vicksburg and Warren County, with highs ranging from the low to high 90s and heat indexes in the triple digits, and nighttime lows in the 70s.

Former Vicksburg Mayor Paul Winfield’s home at 1211 Mulvihill St. was sold under conditions resulting from a divorce settlement between he and his ex-wife, Malissa Winfield, who has changed to her maiden name of Wilson. Winfield pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Natchez on Sept. 16 to one count of bribery involving a pre-disaster cleanup contract that was never awarded. He is serving time in a minimum-security facility in Montgomery, Ala., and is expected to be released Oct. 28, 2015.
At least seven of 11 entities who formally protested their county property tax assessments will have their taxes lowered after adjustments by the Warren County Tax Assessor’s Office.
In a related topic, the Warren County Board of Supervisors approved a one-year contract for Wes Kight and Associates LLC of Louisville for $176,400. Wes Kight is the county’s contract appraiser to appraise land and homes in Vicksburg and the county.
Community Health Systems, the parent company of River Region Medical Center, reported personal information on about 4.5 million patients at its hospitals, including some who received care at River Region, had been hacked over the past five years. Company officials said Community was the victim of a cyber attack from China, which stole social security numbers and other personal information on the patients.
Asbestos problems forced the Board of Mayor and Aldermen to halt roofing projects for the central fire station, fire station No. 6 and the city’s vehicle maintenance barn after asbestos was discovered in the roofs prior to beginning the projects. The board approved a $176,000 contract to roof fire station No. 6 and the water treatment plant on Haining
Road in May, and the central fire station and vehicle maintenance building in July. No asbestos was found at the water treatment plant.
The Warren County Parks and Recreation Commission delayed action on a proposed car fee to help erase a more than $40,405.04 deficit. The board might have also violated the state’s Open Meetings Act when it met later with two members of Vicksburg’s ad hoc committee on recreation in a closed session to discuss types of funding.
Former Vicksburg Warren School District Trustee Jan Hyland Daigre, who finished second to Shelly Ashley-Palmertree in the 2011 election, and Robert Donohue IV, an employee at Fred’s Super Dollar have qualified for the special election to fill Palmertree’s unexpired term as clerk, joining interim Clerk Greg Peltz, who qualified Aug. 5.
Warren County supervisors declared Palmertree’s office vacant May 19 amid a continuing financial scandal involving her office.
