Services for Toney Kimbrough Cummins, 52, of Vicksburg, are 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Vicksburg. Visitation is from 9 a.m. until the service.

Toney, who died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014, was a Vicksburg native and son of the late Reid “Mugsy” and Ernestine Cummins. He received a B.S. in civil engineering in 1986 from the University of Mississippi and an M.S. in civil engineering in 1996 from Mississippi State University.

Toney joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1982 as a student trainee in the Geomechanics Division, Structures Laboratory, Waterways Experiment Station. He joined the Corps full-time in 1986 and was promoted to research civil engineer. For many years, he conducted research in the development of innovative blast and ballistic resistant construction materials and protective concepts for buildings and structures.

In 2008, Toney became chief of the Concrete and Materials Branch. In 2011, he joined the GSD Research Group to provide technical guidance and oversight on new and emerging research programs. He authored more than 20 publications and was selected in 2012 as one of the Army’s Top Inventors for 2009-11.

His Corps of Engineers family and those who love him remember him not just for his brilliant career, but for his willingness to serve in any role, his graciousness and kindness to others, his keen sense of humor and infectious laugh, and his ability to bring people together inside and outside ERDC.

Survivors include his wife, Colleen Davern Cummins of Vicksburg; in-laws, Nancy and John Markley of Homer, La.; brother-in-law, Michael Davern of Delta, La.; brother, Kelly (Ruth) Cummins of Clinton; sister, Kimberly (Jon) Noble of Cleveland, Texas; aunt and uncle, Carolyn and Ken Theis of Pine Bluff, Ark.; nieces, Leigh Cummins of Nashville, Tenn., and Meg Cummins of Oxford; and cousin, Ellen Theis Nelson of Rogers, Ark.
