Temperatures in the low to mid-90s with heat indexes in the triple digits continued to warm the area during the week, with scattered occasional light showers providing some relief late in the afternoon to some areas.
The Mississippi River was at 15.25 feet Aug. 30. It was at 14.50 feet Friday. Flood stage is 43 feet.

Melvin Wiggins, 21, the driver of a truck used in the March 2013 drive-by shooting that killed a Vicksburg High School student, pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to second-degree murder and was sentenced to five years in prison. He was one of seven people charged in the shooting of Ke’Marvin Stamps, 17. Two other defendants, Devonte Montgomery, 19, and Christopher Devon Jones, 20, have also pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact charges. Both received five-year sentences. The cases against four other defendants remain open.

Latoya Nicole Brisco, 27, will go to trial in March for the Nov. 18 stabbing death of Carl Whitaker, 50. Brisco is accused of stabbing Whitaker multiple times at his home in the China Grove community.

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen took a second look at the city’s fiscal 2015 budget after finding a $1.1 million deficit. The board is expected to approve the budget Wednesday.
In other city news, the board signed an agreement with Kansas City Southern Railroad that lets the city build an emergency access road west of the Speed Street crossing that will allow the railroad to close the crossing creating a quiet zone where trains will not have to blow their horns as they approach the crossing. The city will extend Klein Street to the KCS switchyard west of the crossing and then build a gravel road along the east side of the yard to Depot Street.
• Residents attending a public hearing at Warren Central High School on recreation in Vicksburg told members of the city’s ad hoc committee on recreation the city needs a multi-purpose recreation complex.
• The Vicksburg Planning Commission meeting as the Board of Zoning Appeals denied a request from the operators of the Tree House at 1837-A Cherry St. for a special exception for a nightclub. Ashley and Eric Lawson, who have a business license for a banquet hall at the address, said they wanted to provide programs such as jazz concerts at the building. They said they were not going to open a nightclub, adding they had to seek the special exception because the wanted to charge admission for the programs and there were no other provisions under the city’s ordinances.

The Warren County Board of Supervisors approved a $15.4 million general fund budget for fiscal 2015, a $267,532 increase over fiscal 2014. The new budget goes into effect Oct. 1.

United Way of West Central Mississippi kicked off its annual fund drive with a program at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center Auditorium. The goal for this year’s campaign is $1.3 million.

The Warren County-Vicksburg Library closed its doors until Sept. 15 for renovations including new carpet, repainting the walls and more comfortable seating.
