Helen Ann Hosemann Walker passed away on Monday, Sept. 8, 2014, at her home in Vicksburg. She was 88 and suffered with Parkinson’s disease.

Mrs. Walker was a devout Catholic and a wonderful mother, grandmother, aunt, and great-grandmother. She was an avid crossword puzzle fan, volunteer, and organizer.

She was born to Cecilia Raba Hosemann and Fire Chief Joseph Francis Hosemann on Nov. 12, 1925, in Vicksburg. Helen was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier Academy in Vicksburg, class of 1944, where she was valedictorian of her class, coronation queen, and spelling bee champion. Upon graduation, Helen lived with her maternal grandparents in San Antonio, Texas, where she began her career as a legal secretary for a law firm. She was a master at secretarial science.

She and her husband, Willie, lived in many places — in Jackson, where Helen was employed by S.N. Thomas and served as a volunteer Cub Scout leader; Hanover, Pa., where Helen was employed with St. Vincent’s Parish, working for Monsignor Maher and was involved in the PTA, neighborhood bridge club and Girl Scouts; Mount Rock, Pa., where she was a member of the local square dancing group; Vicksburg, where she was employed as a secretary for St. Aloysius High School by the Rev. Alfred Camp for 35 years, and was a member of the Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality at St. Paul Catholic Church as prefect for over 10 years and volunteered for Girl Scouts of America; Charleston, W.Va., where she was an employee of Sears Roebuck and Co.; Twin Falls, Idaho, as an employee of Allied Steele; and finally returning to St. Al upon her return to Mississippi.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Dorothy Fields, Mary Theresia Tucker, and Florence Bourn; two brothers, Joseph Francis Hosemann, Jr. and Edward (Johnny) Hosemann; her husband of 62 years, Willie E. Walker; and grandsons, Brett Walker and Johnathan Rebert.

Surviving relatives include her sister, Ernestine McBroom of Gainesville, Ga.; four children, Virginia “Ginger” Rebert of Vicksburg, Robert E. “Bob” Walker of Hattiesburg, Janice McKercher (Dave) of Vicksburg and Anita Walker Lyle (Ken) of Abilene, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Nicholas Rebert (Desi) of Lebanon, Pa., Clay Rebert (CeCe) of Lebanon, Chance Rebert (Amanda), Alicia Funkhouser (David) of Phoenix, Ariz., Haley Walker (Daniel Hartzog) of Austin, Texas, William McKercher (Jessica) of Brandon, Andrew McKercher (Sara) of Jackson, Theodore “Jaime” McKercher of Austin, Texas, Walker Lyle (Kate) of Austin, and Emma Lyle Sutton (Jase) of Abilene, Texas; 19 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Services are 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12, 2014, at St. Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. Tom Lalor officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Gardens.

Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014, at Glenwood Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Nicholas Rebert, Clay Rebert, Chance Rebert, William McKercher, Andrew McKercher, Theodore “Jaime” McKercher, and Walker Lyle.
