A house on Lake Hill Drive destroyed by fire in May could soon be coming down.

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen Monday authorized Community Development Director Victor Gray-Lewis to raze the house at 316-A Lake Hill Drive and remove two inoperable vehicles — a van and a car — from the property, which has been abandoned since the fire.

The fire occurred May 19, starting in the electrical panel box of the house and spreading to the attic. The eight people in the house, including a disabled man and a 10-year-old child, escaped the blaze without injury.

No date was given when the building would be torn down.

The house was one of six properties to be clean and cleared either by a private contractor hired by the city or city workers. The other five properties include 1314 Jefferson St., 1311 Jefferson St., a lot on Spouts Springs Road, 110 Wabash Ave. and 801 W. Pine St.

The board granted a 30-day extension to the property owner of a lot at 1706 Military Ave. to remove a dilapidated building.

Under state law, the city has the right to clean and clear private property if it is deemed to be a health and safety threat to a neighborhood and charge to property owner for the work.

To recover those expenses, the board can go to county tax rolls and places liens on the properties to recover the costs if the property owner does not reimburse the city.

In other action, the board:

• Approved paying the $40,211.32 to Vicksburg-Warren 911 for the city’s share of dispatchers’ salaries and benefits.

• Approved a request from the Vicksburg and Warren County Historical Society to block Cherry, Jackson, Monroe and Grove streets around the Old Court House Museum for the annual Fall Flea Market Oct. 4.

• Approved the claims docket.
