Area weather continued in an Indian Summer mode, as temperatures remained warm and mild in the area with highs staying for the most part in the 80s and lows in the upper 60s.
The Mississippi River was at 20.06 feet Sept. 27. It was 14.44 feet Friday. Flood stage is 43 feet.

Former Warren County Circuit Clerk Shelly Ashley-Palmertree was sentenced Monday to five years in prison after a plea hearing in Warren County Circuit Court. Palmertree pleaded guilty to embezzling $12,000 from her office’s civil and criminal accounts for her own use. She was ordered to reimburse the money to the county as part of the sentence. She must report to the Warren County Jail Oct. 15 to begin her sentence.
Palmertree was removed from office by the Board of Supervisors in May when it was discovered she declared her residence in Madison County in 2013. A civil suit filed by her in Hinds County Chancery Court in 2013 over whether she owes the county $671,751.75 in excessive salary and questionable subcontractor payments to her father and predecessor in office. Larry Ashley, has not been resolved.

Two Warren County men who broke into the home of an elderly couple on Jan. 14, and shot them in the head were each sentenced to 60 years in prison. Circuit Judge Isadore Patrick sentenced Rodriquez Lenez Lyons, 20, and Tierre Jante Hill, 23, at a sentencing hearing Friday in circuit court. The pair must serve the sentences day-for-day. Patrick sentenced their accomplice, Kenjarvis Thomas, 17, to 20 years. Thomas stayed in the car while the other two went inside.
The couple survived the shooting, but the man has since died. The cause of his death was not related to the shooting, authorities said.

The Vicksburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen learned the city would finish the 2014 fiscal year with a $1.14 million surplus, about a $1.61 million difference from fiscal 2013, when the city recorded a $473,000 deficit.

Vicksburg police arrested 11 people on drug charges in a Tuesday drug roundup that resulted from a four-month investigation into complaints of drug activity in different areas of the community.

A building at the Hinds Community College’s Warren County campus was named for Vicksburg Warren School District Trustee and longtime Hinds employee Joe Loviza. Loviza, who was the Warren County campus’ first employee when it opened, held several offices at the campus, and was dean of the local campus until his retirement.

A city sewer department crew cleaning a private sewer line on Eastover Drive by mistake sent raw sewage exploding back into a nearby apartment complex, damaging five apartments.
