Bovina Elementary School was established originally in 1953, and then renovated in 1987 to add additional classrooms. In 1999-2000 it was converted to an alternative school and then reopened in 2008-09 as an elementary school. Bovina serves approximately 350 students in grades K-6. Bovina is in the center of a small, close-knit community of caring families.
Bovina Elementary School’s mission statement is “Equipping Today’s Youth to become Tomorrow’s Leaders.” Operating in accordance to this mission, Bovina Elementary was recently named one of 101 “Lighthouse” Schools in the world, and 1 of 2 in the State of Mississippi. Bowmar Elementary is the other school in the state receiving this recognition. Lighthouse recognition is awarded to exceptional schools due to the results a school is achieving and the impact it is having on staff, students, parents, and the greater community. The “Leader in Me” is based on Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The “Leader in Me” focuses on shifting leadership roles to the students. Students devise personal and classroom mission statements, set personal and academic goals, practice public speaking, and track data. Lighthouse recognition has come years after working closely with the Vicksburg-Warren County Chamber of Commerce to fund and implement this new initiative. Bovina and Bowmar were also recently awarded The Governor’s Award of Distinction for the partnership between the schools, the Chamber of Commerce, and the community.
Bovina Elementary School has a strong focus on academic success showing academic gains for each year of operation, but also enjoys seeing students flourish in other areas. Each grade level in the school focuses on a monthly community service project in order to teach the children the value of giving back, that they each have the potential to make a difference in the lives of others, and that they can make a positive contribution regardless of their age. The Bovina Brigade Robotics Team, during its first year of existence, received awards for Research, Judges Award, and Robot Performance. We are expanding that program during the 2014-15 school year. Students have also won numerous awards through the Bovina Elementary Honor Choir, State Honor Choir, Community Poster Contests, Vicksburg’s Parade of Lights, PBS State Writing Contests, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and participation in other sports related activities within the community. We strive to offer a comprehensive educational program.
A successful school is the direct result of a dedicated, passionate staff, engaged students, committed parents, and supportive community. Bovina has been blessed with all of the above. We are very appreciative of the support we have received over the years and realize educating children is the responsibility of all stakeholders in order to have a viable and productive community. “Many small people, in many small places, do many small things, that can alter the face of the world.” ~Anonymous
