An unopposed undertaking

Many things we do in life have far reaching consequences and often we face opposition from people we never expected it from.
Looking back on my life I know there have been a few pivotal moments. When I decided I wanted to join the Army my dad was my stiffest opposition. The retired Chief Petty Officer couldn’t see his son digging ditches all day. I hardly touched a shovel after I got out of basic training.
I thought for sure that my mom would break down and beg me not to go, but she didn’t, at least not until I was actually leaving. She understood that at a certain point a boy becomes a man and must live with the decisions he makes.
I admit that I made some dumb decisions and some I’m still paying for today.
Then there are the decisions that didn’t affect my life so drastically, at least not at first. They were slow to develop and only visible with hindsight.
Hindsight is a parent’s super power and children think we’re old and fuddy-duddy when we use it. I know I used to think that of my parents.
My son Scott is facing a decision that will change his life. He is trying to decide where he wants to go to college. The decision to go to college is a big one by itself, but he is facing some opposition from an unexpected place.
I know which college I’d choose for him, but ultimately he’s got to decide.
You know you’re in the will of God when you face opposition on what seems like all sides and from unexpected places.
My wife and I will steer him in the direction we feel is right for him, but ultimately it’s his decision.
If Scott is anything like his dad he’ll do what I would. A little opposition only made me want it that much more.
An unopposed undertaking isn’t worth doing.
