Delta State’s reward for its latest Gulf South Conference championship is a week off.
The Statesmen received the No. 2 seed in Super Region II of the NCAA Division II playoff bracket on Sunday, and will get a first-round bye. They’ll host either Tuskegee or West Georgia in the second round on Nov. 29.
Tuskegee and West Georgia meet in the first round on Saturday. Delta State’s only loss this season came at the hands of GSC rival West Georgia on Oct. 18.
Delta State (9-1) beat Mississippi College 27-3 last Saturday to win the Gulf South Conference title. Delta State, which won the national championship in 2000 and was the national runner-up in 2010, will be making its eighth playoff appearance overall.
“Super Region II is always one of the most difficult in the playoffs and we will have our hands full no matter who advances out of the first round,” DSU coach Todd Cooley said. “Coach Willie Slater at Tuskegee always has the Golden Tigers ready to play and we know what West Georgia is capable of doing.”
