Two elderly Newellton, La., residents were killed when the vehicle they were in crashed head-on into a dump truck on Louisiana 4 in Tensas Parish.

At about 2:50 p.m., an eastbound 2010 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 95-year-old Ralph Coleman of Newellton veered into the westbound lane of Louisiana 4 about five miles west of U.S. 65 near the Banks Springs community and struck a westbound Mack dump truck, Louisiana State Police spokesman Michael Reichardt said.

Coleman and his passenger, Jewell Lee, 90, of Newellton, were pronounced dead at the crash site, Reichardt said.

The dump truck was followed by another Mack dump truck, which struck the rear of the lead truck, Reichardt said. Both truck drivers were taken to local hospitals for minor injuries, Reichardt said. The names of the truck drivers were not released.

A routine toxicology sample was obtained from each of the drivers and will be submitted for analysis, Reichardt said.
