Authorities in Warren County searched this morning for leads in the theft of two ATMs at neighboring banks on U.S. 61 North.
Deputies responded to an alarm at BancorpSouth, 1240 U.S. 61 North, at 5:33 a.m., where the ATM was missing, Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said. A forklift stolen from a nearby business was found in a driveway at the bank, Pace said. Within a minute, the machine itself was found in the bed of a 1987 Chevrolet pickup left parked on the side of the road less than a mile away, Pace said. Upon a check of the tag number, the vehicle was reported stolen Wednesday in Clinton, he said.
At the scene, deputies noticed the ATM at RiverHills Bank, 1400 U.S. 61 North, was missing.
The alarm at Bancorp came as deputies were already responding to an alarm at Beechwood Elementary, where they determined a rock had been thrown through a window, Pace said. That alarm came in at 4:51 a.m. Deputies responded to the bank alarm within three minutes, but suspects had already fled, Pace said.
“We’re not dismissing the possibility the alarm was a diversion while the ATM was being stolen,” Pace said.
A dark, 1990s model GMC stepside pickup was seen on security video leaving the bank, which Pace said his office was working with other law enforcement agencies to find.
“It should have significant damage to the passenger side,” Pace said. “We’re reviewing security video, but anyone who might have seen something while driving by this morning is encouraged to contact us or Crime Stoppers.”
Warren County Sheriff’s Department may be reached at 601-636-1761. Emergency calls may be placed by dialing 911.
Central Mississippi Crime Stoppers, 601-355-8477, will pay a cash reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to the arrest of a felony suspect. Callers remain anonymous and do not have to testify in court.
