The Krewe of Danny Hearn Trucking won Best in Show for their float in last year’s Mardi Gras parade.

Carnival season begins Wednesday and the Vicksburg Main Street Program is seeking applications for the 14th annual Mardi Gras Parade, scheduled for Feb. 7.

“We have set the date for the parade earlier this year because of Valentine’s Day,” said Kim Hopkins, the executive director of the Vicksburg Main Street Program.

“We usually have the parade the Saturday before Fat Tuesday, but we didn’t want to shut down downtown traffic for Valentine’s Day,” she said.

Last year more than 25 floats and groups participated in the parade, and Hopkins said she is hoping more business will participate this year.

“I want to encourage businesses to come out and support us,” she said.

The fee to participate is $25 for non-profit and civic groups and $50 for businesses and after Jan. 28 fees will double, Hopkins said.

The parade will begin at 4 p.m. and start at Washington and Belmont streets and will roll north on Washington Street to Jackson Street.
