The Vicksburg Missy Gators found success and happiness Friday night by bringing some balance to their lives.

Four players scored a goal, including tallies by Amy Dixon and Mikayla Banks 2 ½ minutes apart late in the first half, and the Missy Gators cruised to a 4-0 win over Ridgeland at Memorial Stadium.

Senior Raven London and freshman Baylee Etheridge added goals in the second half.

“That was a good win for us,” London said. “I feel like we worked as a team, and it felt right tonight. It just felt right. It was more fun tonight.”

The Missy Gators (6-1, 2-0 Division 4-5A) clinched a season sweep against Ridgeland (2-10, 1-2) and likely a playoff berth with Friday’s victory. They have two division games left with Callaway, Tuesday night in Jackson and Jan. 20 in Vicksburg, and can win the division title by winning both of those games.

VHS can also win the division on goal differential in its two games with Callaway.

Vicksburg coach Karen Carroll, however, had bigger goals in mind after seeing her team’s performance Friday night.

Banks, who has 20 goals this season, has carried the bulk of the offensive load. Her teammates finally got on the board Friday, however, and seemed to make the Missy Gators a much more balanced and dangerous team.

In the 30th minute, Caroline Williams’ corner kick led to a scrum in front of the net. Dixon eventually took a short pass from Leiana Thornell and booted it past the keeper for the first goal of the game.

Banks scored on a breakaway 2 ½ minutes later to put Vicksburg ahead 2-0, and it controlled the action nearly the entire second half. The Missy Gators outshot Ridgeland 14-7 and put the game on ice with goals by London in the 62nd minute and Etheridge in the 73rd.

“I hope that we can get several people involved, and we did tonight. Four different scorers, four different people assisting. That’s game-winners right there,” Carroll said. “If we can get that every game, we can go to the state championship. I really believe that.”

(B) Ridgeland 3, Vicksburg 0

Mohammad Ibrahim, Manuel Mendivil and Henry Salamanca each scored a goal in the first half to propel Ridgeland (6-7, 3-0 Division 4-5A) past Vicksburg (4-10, 0-2).

Vicksburg suffered its sixth consecutive shutout loss — it hasn’t scored since beating Brookhaven 3-1 on Nov. 21 — but can still clinch a playoff berth by beating Callaway twice. The teams play Tuesday in Jackson and Jan. 20 at Memorial Stadium.

“We’re looking to take care of business with Callaway,” VHS coach Michael Guidry said. “We had an unlucky run. The game (Jan. 7) with Warren Central was our first in a calendar month, and then we’re also dealing with the loss of a couple of players.”
