Two Vicksburg men were arrested Friday after a shooting Thursday police said was over money.
Anfernee Chiplin, 18, 1414 First East St., and Geremiah London, 18, 200 Curry St., were arrested and charged in the shooting of Tyrone Appleton, 20, 1314 Spring St., Vicksburg Police Capt. Sandra Williams said.
Appleton was shot in the leg during a fight near First North and Grove streets. He was treated and released Friday from River Region Medical Center.
Chiplin was charged with aggravated assault and shooting into an occupied dwelling, while London was charged with accessory after the fact for driving Chiplin away from the scene, Williams said.
“We believe this was an argument regarding money,” Williams said Saturday.
Chiplin was held Saturday in Warren County Jail on a $125,000 bond, while London was released from the jail after posting a $5,000 bond.
Tyson ammonia leak termed minor
Authorities said an accidental release of anhydrous ammonia Saturday at the Tyson Foods plant at Ceres industrial park was minor and posed no threat to the public.
Employees evacuated the plant for a brief time after the release was reported to Vicksburg Warren E-911 around 2:15 p.m. Emergency officials theorized it was a maintenance issue.
“It was never enough to warrant concern,” Warren County Emergency Management Director John Elfer said. “Routinely, they have these releases. It just might have been more than what they anticipated.”
A crew with the Bovina Volunteer Fire Department was sent to handle precautionary hazmat operations.
The substance is used in the beef and chicken processing industries to kill bacteria.
Oak Grove man killed in wreck
An Oak Grove, La., man was killed Saturday in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 20 in Richland Parish.
Jerry Ratcliff, 70, died after his westbound 2009 Ford Ranger left the interstate and struck a tree at Holly Ridge, La., at about 7:50 a.m., Louisiana State Police spokesman Michael Reichardt said.
Ratcliff, who was unrestrained, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Richland Parish Coroner, Reichardt said.
Alcohol use is not suspected but a toxicology sample was obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.
