Warren Central dominated just about every aspect of its game against O’Bannon on Saturday, from the boards to the paint to the final score. It seemed like the only thing the Lady Vikes didn’t control was the clock, which meticulously ticked by as they racked up a huge 82-40 win over the Lady Greenwaves to take home a Red Carpet Classic trophy at Vicksburg High School.

“I thought we were just a little bit more experienced than they were. I talked to their coach before the game and he said they’re rebuilding,” Warren Central coach Jacqueline Glass said. “They’re really young and inexperienced, and also we started playing without our point guard (T.T. Sims) or it probably would have been worse than that.”

Sims, who was on the bench in street clothes, is day-to-day with a stretched foot ligament. Her absence put pressure on her teammates to handle the ball, which Glass said she was happy to see.

“If there’s one area where we’re definitely going to have to improve upon it’s going to be handling the ball, going left, being able to go left and right,” Glass said. “Without T.T. playing today, who handles the ball 90 percent of the time, they were able to get some good experience handling the ball.”

The Lady Vikes (10-10) started the game on a 15-2 run before O’Bannon clawed its way back by scoring 12 straight points.

But, in a game that was defined by long Warren Central runs, Glass’ team shot out on a 25-8 run of its own to close out the half with a 40-20 lead.

“I was a little disappointed that they let them come back and make a game out of it. I thought we should have taken off and led the whole way, but it was still good for the crowd,” Glass said. “I think it was good for their team to fight back and feel some success playing against a bigger school.”

The second half was all Lady Vikes.

Warren Central started the third quarter by scoring the first five buckets and O’Bannon (4-14) — a Class 3A school — never came close to bringing the game within 20 points. The Lady Vikes’ lead ballooned to 70-33 even with most of their starters out of the game. They scored 12 of the final 16 points.

DeeDee Caldwell led all scorers with 18 points for Warren Central, while Shae Bracey finished the game with 10.

“It’s a good confidence builder,” Glass said. “Like I said, today I actually wanted to actually work on areas where I know we’re weak: pressing some, being aggressive on the traps. Overall, it was a good builder for us in that area.”

Mario Doyle hit four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 25 points to lead Warren Central (8-12) to a come-from-behind win over Greenville O’Bannon (11-9).

Warren Central trailed 45-42 heading into the fourth quarter, but shut down the Greenwaves to take control and pull ahead.

Chris Stamps and Tristan Lowry added 10 points apiece for Warren Central, which will hit the road to face Murrah in a key Division 4-6A game Tuesday night in Jackson.

Dimitri Wooten led O’Bannon with 24 points, and Trevonte Lewis scored 10.
