Spring is still weeks away, but preparations for the spring sports season have already begun across Warren County.

Registration periods for more than a half-dozen youth sports leagues and several other activities are now under way and will continue into February:

• The deadline to register for the Vicksburg Soccer Organization’s spring season is Sunday. The league is open to children ages 4-18 and there are both competitive and recreational leagues.

• The YMCA Biddy Basketball program will continue registration until Feb. 7. The six-week program begins on Feb. 17 and is designed to teach children ages 5-7 the fundamentals of basketball in a non-competitive environment.

The program is limited to 160 spots

“They’re so young that it’s important to teach them the motor skills to play, and the Y is a great basis for that,” Vicksburg YMCA program director Allison East said. “If you’re someone who wants to get into sports, we want them to come.”

The YMCA is also offering beginner swim lessons for children ages 5-12 beginning Feb. 9. For information on all YMCA programs, call 601-638-1071.

• Two youth basketball leagues are preparing to begin their seasons. The Kings Empowerment Center Church League starts play on Saturday, while the Vicksburg Premier Youth Basketball League is accepting registration until Feb. 16.

The Premier league is for boys and girls ages 6-14. It has four age groups, an eight-week schedule including a league tournament, and every child is guaranteed to play 20 minutes in every game.

For more information on the Premier League, call Robert Jones at 601-291-1371.

• The Run Thru History 10K might be too challenging for youngsters, but they can still try to tackle the event’s 1-mile fun run. The bigger race is March 7 at the Vicksburg National Military Park, and the fun run starts in front of Battlefield Inn immediately after the runners and race walkers finish up.

To register or for more information, visit the Purks YMCA or call 601-638-1071, or go online to runthruhistory.org.

• Finally, the biggest sign of spring is baseball and softball, and both seasons are fast approaching.

The Vicksburg Warren Athletic Association is accepting registration for the 2015 baseball season until Feb. 28.

The league is for children ages 5-15. To register online, visit sports.bluesombrero.com/vwaabaseball. For more information, email vwaabaseball@gmail.com.

The Vicksburg Girls Softball Association’s registration period is also open until Feb. 28. Players ages 6-18 can register online at vicksburggsa.com, or pick up a registration form at Hobie’s or Just Duett Sports.
