Vicksburg residents were encouraged to take caution overnight due to winter weather conditions.

Vicksburg saw some freezing rain and sleet, according to meteorologist Joanne Culin at the National Weather Service in Jackson.

“According to our latest observation we have rain moving through,” she said Monday afternoon. “A cold front is moving through and tonight we are going to have lows around 25.”

Warren County Emergency Management Director John Elfer said his main concern for Monday night was the wind chill.

“A couple of degree shifts and we could see some frozen stuff on the overpass, but anything we get should be out of here by 9 p.m.,” he said.

Despite cold temperatures overnight, roads and sidewalks were clear Tuesday morning. Bridges and overpasses freeze before road surfaces. Elevated surfaces will freeze first. Residents are urged to use caution when traveling and avoid any slick or icy spots that may remain. Elfer said there is no widespread hazardous weather expected for the next several days.

Vicksburg Warren County Superintendent Chad Shealy said schools were open Tuesday on a regular schedule.

“The patrol guys are out all night,” he said. “They’re a great resource, and they’ll let us know early.”

Shealy said there is always a chance schools will have a delayed start but that call is made in the morning.

Tuesday’s forecast includes some clouds with highs around 40 degrees with the wind chill below freezing until Wednesday morning. Tuesday night the temperature will drop to the upper 20s but should remain dry.
