Cold weather continued over the area as a cold front preceded by rain kept high temperatures in the mind- to upper 40s and lows in the 20s. A slight warming trend was expected for the weekend.
The Mississippi River was at 17.09 feet Feb. 14. Flood stage is 43 feet.
City officials proclaimed Wednesday through Sunday Malcolm Butler week to honor New England Patriots defensive back and Vicksburg native Malcolm Butler whose pass interception in the closing seconds of the Super Bowl sealed a win for the Patriots. A Saturday parade was also planned to honor Butler.
The Warren County Board of Supervisors lifted a countywide burn ban initiated Feb. 13 after rains Monday provided sufficient moisture to alleviate dry conditions in the county.
In other county news, the supervisors adding 1.3 more miles of striping on Oak Ridge Road between U.S. 61 North and Culkin Road.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen said hired JCI Holdings LLC of Sunrise Beach, Mo., for a costs not to exceed $9,225 to examine three potential sites for a proposed sports complex at the city’s Fisher Ferry site, on Bazinsky Road by Halls Ferry Park and the Mississippi Bluffs property.
In other city news, the board amended the city’s contract with JH&H Architects of Jackson to design the new roof for the Vicksburg Convention Center to allow the company to find the source of leaks on the building’s west and south walls.
A teenager was shot about a block away from American Legion Post 3 on Monroe Street after Vicksburg police and security guards broke up a party at the post hall following a series of fights at the party. The 16-year-old was wounded in the arm and treated and released from River Region Hospital. No arrests were made.
Vicksburg High School senior English teacher Donna Carpenter was named the Vicksburg-Warren County Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year at the secondary level. Ashley Coomes, a language, writing and social studies teacher at Redwood Elementary, was educator of the year at the elementary level.
Officials with electronics giant Radio Shack announced the Vicksburg Radio Shack, which has been in the city for 41 years, will be closing as the company tries to reorganize under the protection of Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy laws.
Officials with Dairy Queen said a Dairy Queen Grill and Chill store could open on Pemberton Square Boulevard by May 10.
