City and county officials were closely monitoring weather Wednesday morning, but with a shift in a winter storm front, exactly what type of wintry weather would hit Warren County wasn’t clear.
“We’re either going to get some cold rain or some mixed precipitation,” Warren County Emergency Manager John Elfer said. “It’s just wait and see.”
County officials closed the courthouse and other county offices because of the uncertain winter weather.
“There’s just too many mays,” District 4 Supervisor Bill Lauderdale said.
Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs Jr. said city offices also were closed today. A Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting set for10 a.m. was cancelled, and the board will hold a special meeting Thursday.
A steady rain moved across the county beginning at 6:30 a.m. It was expected to possibly turn to sleet before 10 a.m. and could turn to snow in the afternoon.
“The weather service still has snow as likely but it will probably be later after it warms up and gets cold again,” Elfer said.
Snow was most likely after 4 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
Law enforcement officials were urging motorist not to get on the roads if at all possible.
“We did not have any major incidences during the night, much of which can be attributed to a very low volume of traffic. I would encourage people that do not have to be out to stay home,” Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said.
Drivers who must get out need to make sure they have plenty of gas and carry a cellphone with them in case they need to call for assistance, Vicksburg Police Chief Walter Armstrong said. Vicksburg police would be monitoring road conditions in the city throughout the day, he said.
“If there are any doubts, they can reach out to the police department and we can give them the best update that we have available,” Armstrong said.
The phone number to the police department is 601-636-2511.
City street superintendent Skipper Whittington said the city’s street were clear but drivers were reporting about 6 a.m. that overpasses crossing Interstate 20 at Halls Ferry Road and Indiana and Wisconsin avenues were beginning to ice over.
City crews were working to put sand on all three bridges. Sand placed on downtown bridges and sloping streets appeared to still be in place Wednesday morning.
According to information from Entergy Mississippi’s website, a power outage affecting about 1,203 customers on both sides of I-20 in Bovina was reported about 7:06 a.m. and the cause was undetermined. Power was expected to be restored later in the morning, according to the website.
Regardless of the afternoon’s ever-evolving forecast, the National Weather service is calling for a 20 percent of light snow in Vicksburg Wednesday night with a low around 26.
Areas north of Vicksburg were expected to see more snow than along the Interstate 20 corridor. Sharkey and Issaquena counties are under a winter storm warning, and could see 3 to 5 inches of snow, according to the weather service.
Any ice or snow leftover from Wednesday should begin to melt Thursday as the mercury reaches 44.
