Two Vicksburg police investigators on an emergency call and the wife of a longtime Warren County deputy were injured in a three-vehicle crash Tuesday morning at Clay and Adams streets.

Vicksburg police Lt. Troy Kimble, investigator Bobby Jones and Rose McKenzie, wife of longtime Warren County deputy Jay McKenzie, were injured in the crash about 11:35 a.m. Tuesday.

All three were taken to River Region Medical Center where they were treated and released, Vicksburg Police Chief Walter Armstrong said.

“Everybody was very fortunate that there weren’t serious injuries. Anytime you have vehicles collide and overturn,” Armstrong said.

Both investigators were responding to a call of an escapee at the Warren County Juvenile Detention Center, Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol spokesman Eric Henry said.

The escapee, who had been detained on charges from the VPD, had not been captured Wednesday morning, Vicksburg police Capt. Sandra Williams said.

The Youth Detention Center is run solely by youth court officials and is not staffed with deputies, Sheriff Martin Pace said.

Kimble was eastbound in a 2008 Chevrolet Impala on Clay Street with emergency lights en route to the detention center on Grove Street when his vehicle struck a southbound 2015 Kia Sorento driven by McKenzie, Henry said.

The Kia then overturned after being struck and then collided with a 2005 Chevrolet Impala driven by Jones that was stopped at the intersection, facing north on Adams St with its emergency lights on, Henry said.

Former assistant district attorney Lane Campbell witnessed the accident but said a car came between him and the crash. He saw Jones’ Impala strike a crepe myrtle several yards from the initial crash site.

“I thought he was stopping traffic. I didn’t realize he had been hit until he hit the tree,” Campbell said.

Kimble is the assistant commander of the criminal investigations division. He was promoted to his current position last fall. In addition to his duties at VPD, Kimble is the Central District Constable and serves on the board of directors of the Mississippi Constables Association.  He was appointed to the constable post in January 2014 after the death of Constable and VPD detective Randy Naylor Sr.

Jones has been with the VPD since at least 2002, according to Vicksburg Post archives. He was a patrolman before moving into the investigations division.
