After 2 1/2 innings Tuesday night, Clinton and Warren Central were locked in an intense — if sloppy — dogfight for control of Division 4-6A.

It didn’t end that way.

The Vikings broke a 4-all tie when John Austin Burris scored on a wild pitch, then went on to score 10 runs in their final three at-bats to blow out Clinton 14-4 at Viking Field.

The two frontrunners for the division championship will play again Friday night in Clinton, but after round one it’s the Vikings (6-3, 4-0 Division 4-6A) who have the upper hand.

“Every win is a big one, but winning the first one in the series is always helpful,” Warren Central coach Conner Douglas said. “It’s good for confidence and it’s a little pressure taken off of you. But, again, we have to forget this one tomorrow and get ready for a good Clinton squad on Friday.”

The teams combined for nine errors in the game. Clinton (7-3, 1-1) also scored a run on a wild pitch in the third inning to tie the game at 4.

After that, it was all Warren Central.

Burris reached on a one-out single in the bottom of the third and eventually scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Marcus Ragan delivered a two-run single and scored on an error to put the Vikings ahead 8-4.

They added another run in the fifth on Tyler McRight’s sacrifice fly, then finished the game by the 10-run mercy rule by exploding for five more runs in the fifth.

McRight and Zach Cox each had two-run singles in the fifth inning. McRight’s base hit to left finished the game.

“Man, we just swung the bats well. We moved runners and got some big, timely hits,” Douglas said.

Brooks Boolos went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for Warren Central. McRight, Cox and Ragan each drove in two runs.

Layne Tedder singled, walked twice and scored three runs, and also pitched a complete game.

Tedder struck out four, walked one and allowed five hits in five innings. He also stayed in the game after taking a comebacker off his right leg in the third inning.

Vicksburg 9, Lanier 0

Will Martin struck out nine batters and only allowed one walk while throwing a complete game as Vicksburg High (1-5, 1-1 Division 4-5A) gave head coach Derrick DeWald his first career victory.

PCA 14, Clinton Christian 4

Jordan Locke, Shelton Miller and Hunter Lyons all doubled as Porters Chapel Academy (3-4, 1-0 District 5-A) routed Clinton Christian.

Zac Morgan pitched a five-inning complete game for the Eagles, who scored 10 runs in the first two innings.
