For five years, Clinton has been the bane of Warren Central’s existence.

The Lady Arrows have beaten WC every time they’ve played in that span — 10 times in all. Some have been close, some have been blowouts. Some, like Tuesday’s matchup at Lucy Young Field, have been exercises in self-destruction and frustration.

Warren Central committed six errors, leading to seven unearned runs and its latest defeat at the hands of the Lady Arrows, 7-2.

“It’s a little bit annoying,” Warren Central coach Dana McGivney said of the losing streak to Clinton.

The loss hurt more than the Lady Vikes’ pride. They can still win the Division 4-6A championship, but need to beat Clinton (7-4, 2-0 Division 4-6A) by at least five runs in the rematch April 14 in Clinton.

That’s a tall order, made taller by the two unearned runs Clinton scored in the seventh inning Tuesday. Run differential is the first tiebreaker.

“That makes it a little harder, but we never should’ve let it come to that. We should’ve made plays instead of handing them runs,” McGivney said. “It was our own miscues that hurt us.”

Warren Central (10-2, 2-1) scored two unearned runs of its own in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead, but couldn’t hold it.

Courtney Moore and Darby Turman each singled and scored a run in the fourth inning, and two errors helped Clinton score four times in all to take the lead for good.

Moore went 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Turman was 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Clinton added the two unearned runs in the seventh to not only put the game out of reach, but possibly the division race as well.

McGivney said that was on the back burner for now.

“You always want to win your district, but at this point it’s about playing and improving every inning and not going stiff every game,” she said.
