For three seasons now, Hunter Lyons has been one of Porters Chapel Academy’s most productive hitters.

Even to him, however, the streak he’s on right now seems ridiculous.

Lyons, PCA’s senior catcher, is hitting .727 overall this season, and .750 over the last eight games. The Eagles (7-5) have won seven of those to put themselves in position to clinch the division title next week when they play three games against Rebul Academy.

“It’s just hard work. We, the team, we hit every second we get the chance and it’s starting to pay off for everybody,” Lyons said.“I wouldn’t expect I would do it. It surprises me. But like I said, hard work pays off. It’s see ball, hit ball. Stay relaxed and don’t try to kill it.”

Lyons and the Eagles both started off a bit slow this season, but picked up the pace against a weaker portion of the schedule. Their winning streak and Lyons’ hot streak coincided with a run of games against three winless teams.

Even so, Lyons has been wearing out whatever arms he faces.

He’s 15-for-20 during his hot streak, with five doubles, 15 RBIs and 15 runs scored.

“Even against a pitching machine and nobody out there, it’s hard not to make some outs,” PCA coach Wade Patrick said. “He’s swinging the bat really well right now.”

Lyons has shown some signs of cooling down this week. He had a seven-game hitting streak snapped when he went 0-for-2 in a 10-0 loss to Central Hinds on Monday.

The next day, he only had one hit in a doubleheader sweep of Veritas, but also only had four plate appearances. With the Eagles well on their way to a pair of 17-0 victories, Lyons was subbed out when the team batted around twice in the first inning each time. In game one, he singled and reached on an error. In game two, he walked twice and scored two runs.

Lyons said hitting this well has sent his confidence soaring.

“Confidence is number one. You have to know you’re going to be hitting when you get up there. You can’t go up there thinking, you have to know you’re going to get a hit,” he said.

Lyons was also pleased that he’s not the only one hitting the ball well. The Eagles have scored 110 runs in their last eight games.

“It’s not just me. We’ve all progressed over the past couple of games and we’ve all come together. Everybody’s getting hits now. We’re doing great,” Lyons said.

All hot streaks eventually come to an end, but Lyons — and everyone associated with PCA’s baseball program — are hopeful he can keep it going all season.

Lyons laughed and said he’s just trying to keep working hard and not dwell too much on recent success.

“I don’t want to brag or anything. I’m scared God is going to put me in my place,” he said with a chuckle. “So I keep my mouth shut and just keep working.”
