It had been 13 months since Drake Dorbeck pitched longer than five innings.

The towering, 6-foot-7 St. Aloysius senior had no problem ending the drought on Tuesday.

Dorbeck dominated Pelahatchie by throwing a one-hit shutout to lead the Flashes to an 8-0 win in the first game of a doubleheader at Bazinsky Field.

St. Al won game two, 24-4.

Dorbeck didn’t walk a batter and struck out seven for his first complete game since March 1, 2014. Tony Beeman singled in the first inning and Tyler Flores reached on an error in the fifth to account for Pelahatchie’s only baserunners.

“I was hitting my spots and they were playing good defense behind me. It’s always good doing good,” Dorbeck said.

While Dorbeck handled the pitching, Will Pierce took care of the hitting for St. Al (8-7, 3-1 Division 7-1A).

Pierce went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. He had a two-run single in the first inning, when the Flashes batted around and scored five runs, and drove in two more with another single in the sixth.

“We were making good contact. Everybody was getting hits, doing what we needed to do, and getting on base,” Pierce said.

Connor Smith went 1-for-3 with a single, two stolen bases and two runs scored for St. Al. Lane Hynum doubled and scored a run, and Derek Dolan had an RBI single.

In game two, Smith went 2-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases and three runs scored. Jacob Breeden was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored, and Pierce had two hits and scored twice. Dolan went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

Josh Brown struck out nine in five innings to get the win on the mound.

The wins were the second and third in four games for the Flashes, sandwiched around a competitive loss to Class 6A power Northwest Rankin. The surge has given them a boost of confidence heading into a key home-and-home series with Cathedral next week.

“We’re definitely getting where we need to be,” Pierce said. “I’d rather have this at the end of the season than the beginning of the season, because we’re heading into the playoffs and have Cathedral next week. That’s a big series, so it’s definitely good to have that.”

Porters Chapel Academy (9-6, 7-0 District 5-A) routed Rebul Academy in a doubleheader Tuesday to clinch the MAIS District 5-A championship.

Taylor Rushing went 4-for-4 with two doubles and four runs scored in game one as the Eagles won 12-3. Garrett Hutchins and Jacob Hoffman drove in two runs apiece, and Hunter Lyons was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

PCA completed the rout by winning 21-4 in game two.

Lyons went 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored. Rushing, Zac Morgan and Bradley McCullough all tripled, and McCullough drove in five runs. Hoffman was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

The win gave Porters Chapel its second consecutive district championship. It’ll play the second-place team from District 6-A in a first-round series beginning April 20.
