Taylor Braley’s Southern Miss career is only 33 games old, but it’ll be hard to ever top the day he had on Sunday.

The freshman third baseman went 4-for-5, homered, doubled and drove in four runs to lead the Golden Eagles to a 6-3 series-clinching win at Western Kentucky.

Braley was just 1-for-8 in the first two games of the series, then had four of the Golden Eagles’ 15 hits on Sunday.

Austin Roussel added three hits and Tim Lynch two. It was Braley’s first hit that got Southern Miss on the board early and on its way to victory.

After a leadoff single by Michael Sterling to start the game and a one-out walk to Dylan Burdeaux, Braley hit his first home run of the season, a three-run shot, to give the Golden Eagles an early 3-0 advantage.

Braley added an RBI double in the fifth inning to push the lead to 5-0.

After Western Kentucky (16-16, 7-8 Conference USA) cut it to 5-3, Roussel singled in a run in the seventh inning to give Southern Miss (20-12-1, 8-6) some breathing room.

James McMahon (7-0) got the win for Southern Miss by allowing one earned run in five innings. He walked two, struck out three and gave up six hits.

Nick Johnson allowed one run in three innings of middle relief, and closer Ryan Milton pitched a perfect ninth inning for his eighth save of the season. Johnson and Milton combined to retire the last 10 batters they faced.

Southern Miss will face Tulane Tuesday night in New Orleans, then return home for a mid-week game against Alcorn State on Wednesday and another C-USA series against Florida Atlantic beginning Friday night.

LSU 6, Auburn 2

Mark Laird went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and two runs scored, and LSU (31-6, 10-5 Southeastern Conference) scored all of its runs in the first three innings en route to a win over Auburn.

LSU pitchers Zac Person (2-0), Parker Bugg and Jesse Stallings teamed up to scatter nine hits. They struck out six and didn’t walk a batter.

LSU won its fourth SEC series in five tries. Auburn (21-15, 5-10) lost its fourth conference series of the season.

Delta State 17, Mississippi College 10

Ben Pickard hit a grand slam as Delta State (17-13, 12-8 Gulf South Conference) scored nine runs in the top of the second inning and kept pouring it on to hold off Mississippi College (12-27, 4-22).

Trent Giambrone added a two-run triple during the big second inning and finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Brandon Cummins hit a solo home run in the third, and Matt Barrett was 3-for-5 with five RBIs and three runs scored.

Caleb Upton went 2-for-5 with two RBIs for Mississippi College.

Former Warren Central star Cody Waddell started on the mound for Delta State, but only lasted 2 1/3 innings. He allowed four runs on four hits, walked two and struck out two.
