Vikings put 7 into state tennis tournament

Warren Central’s tennis players will have to wait a few more days to see if they can win division championships. Until then, they at least know they’ll get to play for a state one.

The Vikings’ girls, boys and mixed doubles teams all advanced to the finals of the Division 4-6A individual tournament Tuesday at Halls Ferry Park before rain forced them to postpone the championship matches until Friday.

The winner and runner-up in each event moves on to the Class 6A individual state tournament May 11-13.

George Wilkerson did complete his run to the boys singles title, beating Clinton’s Brandon Doyle 6-1, 6-0 before the rain came.

Warren Central’s Amanda Boleware and Madison Kendall (girls doubles), Joseph Jabour and Alex Velazquez (boys doubles) and Matthew Register and Avery Liddell all won their first-round matches.

The girls and mixed doubles finals never got started. Jabour and Velazquez were trailing Clinton’s Saideep Reddy and Eric Prather 5-4 in the first set when play was suspended.
