Since last August, Cathedral has been more than just a rival for St. Aloysius. It’s been a nemesis.

Accordingly, the Green Wave took one last thing from the Flashes before the high school sports calendar came to an end.

Sam Parker drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the eighth inning to bring in the go-ahead run, and Cathedral added two more runs on a wild pitch and sacrifice fly to beat St. Al 6-3 Wednesday night at Bazinsky Field.

Cathedral (12-2, 5-0) clinched the Division 7-1A title with the win and ended St. Al’s (9-8, 3-2) two year reign as champion. The teams play again tonight in Natchez. St. Al can clinch second place with a win, but will be third with a loss. The Flashes have clinched a playoff berth regardless of what happens tonight.

St. Al had a chance to set up a winner-take-all game with Cathedral for the division title but let a lead slip away and then couldn’t gain the upper hand in a back-and-forth contest.

Cathedral took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning when Craig Bradley singled in a run and Andrew Beesley scored on a sacrifice fly.

St. Al tied it in the bottom of the seventh when Lane Hynum brought in Landon Middleton with a bases-loaded ground out. The Flashes left two runners in scoring position, however, and then fell apart as the game went to extra innings.

Two walks and a bunt single loaded the bases for Cathedral, then Parker drew his bases-loaded walk to bring in the go-ahead run. A wild pitch allowed Brock Farmer to score, and Reed White came in on Andrew Beesley’s sacrifice fly to make it 6-3.

In the bottom of the eighth, George Tzotzolas and Lee Simpson singled to bring the tying run to the plate with one out. Cathedral pitcher Gabe Smith got Middleton to pop out, however, then struck out Connor Smith on four pitches to end the game.

Beesley finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored for Cathedral and Bradley had two hits.

Hynum was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for St. Al, Simpson drove in a run and Tzotzolas had two hits.

St. Al pitcher Will Pierce allowed three runs on seven hits in seven strong innings, but wound up with a no-decision. He walked three batters and struck out eight.

Greenville 9, Warren Central 6

Edarrius Hendrix doubled twice and drove in two runs, and Greenville (3-7, 3-6 Division 4-6A) stunned Warren Central (13-8, 7-2) Wednesday night at Viking Field.

Greenville snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Vikings and won for just the second time in 21 games against them since 2008.

The Hornets scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning to take the lead for good. Jaylyn Williams had an RBI triple, and Hendrix drove in two runs with a double.

Warren Central scored twice in the sixth inning and once in the seventh to close the gap, but never brought the tying run to the plate.

Zach Cox went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored for Warren Central, and Brooks Boolos drove in one run and scored another. John Austin Burris also had two hits, while Logan Stewart had two RBIs.
