Late rally lifts Gators over Callaway

If the Vicksburg Gators had lost on Monday, it might not have been the worst thing in the world.

Even so, winning felt pretty darn good.

Chris Prentiss went from first to third on a hit by Chandler Luke in the top of the seventh inning, then hustled home with the go-ahead run when Luke got himself caught in a rundown. It turned into the winning run moments later, as the Gators hung on to beat Callaway 3-2.

The victory secured for Vicksburg the No. 2 seed in Division 4-5A. It’ll host Center Hill in Game 1 of a best-of-three series Thursday at Bazinsky Field.

Game 2 will be at Center Hill (11-12) on Friday, and if a Game 3 is necessary it’ll be back at Bazinsky on Saturday. The times of all three games will be set later today.

A loss Monday would have dropped the Gators to third place in Division 4-5A and kept them from a potential matchup with undefeated Oxford in the second round of the playoffs.

Vicksburg coach Derrick DeWald, though, was very pleased with Monday’s win. The Gators (7-14) snapped a three-game losing streak by overcoming a 2-1 deficit in the sixth inning.

“It was the first time all season that we were able to overcome a deficit and win a ballgame,” DeWald said. “This should be a confidence booster going into the playoffs. I was very pleased with us fighting back and finding a way to win.”

Prentiss finished the game 2-for-2 with a walk, and Justin Jones had an RBI single that tied the game at 2 in the sixth inning.

Prentiss got on base in the seventh, and scored from first on Luke’s heads-up baserunning play.

“He didn’t receive an RBI on the play, but he did a good job to get Chris home,” DeWald said.

Will Martin threw his second complete game of the season for the Gators. He walked three batters and struck out seven.

“I was proud of how Will competed on the mound and gave us a chance to win. We played great defense behind him,” DeWald said.

Germantown 5, Warren Central 3

Hunter Shows drove in two runs with a single in the top of the seventh inning, and Germantown (22-2) rallied to beat Warren Central (15-9). Germantown scored one run in the sixth inning and two in the seventh to steal the win.

Marcus Ragan went 2-for-4 and scored a run for Warren Central, and Taft Nesmith pitched five-plus innings before leaving with a no-decision.

Nesmith allowed one hit and two unearned runs. He walked two batters and struck out nine.
