After four relatively easy wins in the postseason, the St. Aloysius Lady Flashes flipped the script Friday night — but the story stayed the same.

St. Al rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Nanih Waiya 7-6 in Game 1 of a Class 1A quarterfinal series at Bazinsky Park.

It was the fifth consecutive postseason win for St. Al, which can advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2002 by winning Game 2 Monday afternoon in Louisville.

If a Game 3 is necessary, it’ll be played immediately after Game 2.

“There was a lot of celebrating tonight, but I assure you it has not gone to their head,” said St. Al coach Candice Reeder, who played on the 2002 team that reached the South State finals. “It just gives us a big confidence boost going up there one-up. All we have to do is win that first game Monday.”

St. Al (12-7-1) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in Game 2, but Nanih Waiya (11-9) tied it with a two-run single by Kaitlyn Burrage in the fourth inning and took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Brantlie Sheets in the fifth.

Michelle Howington’s two-run single put St. Al back in front, but Nanih Waiya scored three times in the sixth inning to take the lead again, 6-4.

St. Al had outscored its opponents 38-7 in the first two rounds, and responded well to the first real adversity it had seen this postseason.

A two-out single by Hannah Ashley put runners at first and third. She then stole second and Jordan McDonald followed with a two-run single to center field to tie the game.

McDonald went to second on the throw home on her hit, and Brooklyn Richards followed with another single. Richards got caught in a rundown between first and second, giving McDonald time to score the go-ahead run.

St. Al pitcher Avery Parman then retired the side in order in the seventh to secure the victory.

“Again and again, they show the world that they deserve to be here and have earned that spot,” said Reeder, whose team finished third in its division but is one win away from reaching the Class 1A final four. “Every game, their faith in themselves and each other grows.”

McDonald was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored for St. Al. Richards had two hits, and Stephanie Schoonover was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Burrage was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Nanih Waiya.
