A Vicksburg woman accused of having several pounds of marijuana was free on bail Thursday.
Latoya Mitchell, 33, 450 Lake Hill Drive, was arrested Wednesday afternoon and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, Vicksburg Police Chief Walter Armstrong said. She was later released on bond.
At the time of her arrest, police and Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics agents seized approximately two pounds of marijuana, Armstrong said.
Bail for Mitchell was set at $10,000 and she was taken to the Warren County Jail.
“Our numbers with the round up and individuals is in excess of 30. We are really hitting the ground running and developing a lot of cases,” he said.
The drug bust Wednesday was not a part of Operation Long Time Coming, a yearlong investigation into mid- to upper-level marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine dealers that netted 18 suspects. The arrest could be a result of a power vacuum left by the removal of a number of drug dealers, Armstrong said.
“There may be a possibility of other people hopping in and selling drugs because these other people have already been arrested. There isn’t going to be any easy money made in Vicksburg selling drugs. Get out and get a job and make it the legal way,” Armstrong said.
Anyone with information about drug activity is encouraged to call Vicksburg police at 601-636-2511. Callers will remain anonymous, Armstrong said. Tips from the community are vital, he said.
“They are really involved in our mission in this war against drugs and with any crime as far as that goes,” he said.
