ARSON FIRE: A crowd of people stand in front of the Vicksburg Walmart, 2150 Iowa Blvd., Tuesday after a man set fire to a pillow while a woman was being detained for shoplifting.

A Warren County man accused of setting a fire in Walmart was held without bail Wednesday.

Thomas Edward Crutchfield, 22, 3636 Redbone Road, Lot 1, surrendered to police and was charged with arson, Vicksburg police Lt. Troy Kimble said.

Crutchfield set fire to a pillow Tuesday morning after he and Ashley Burrough, 26, 425 John Russell Road, went into the store to shoplift, Kimble said.

“The setting of the fire was to allow her to get away with the shoplifting. It was a distraction,” Kimble said.

Burrough was caught at the store by employees as she was trying to leave with merchandise and physically fought to get away. She is charged with misdemeanor shoplifting and simple assault. It was unclear if she was involved in planning the fire.

Burrough was arrested at the store by Vicksburg police, but Cutchfield got away. His car was located in the county Tuesday, and he later surrendered to police.

Crutchfield was set to appear Wednesday in Vicksburg Municipal Court.
