Southern Miss kept climbing through the record book, and in the standings.
Austin Roussel and Chase Scott homered during a five-run rally in the fifth inning, and the Golden Eagles beat Middle Tennessee 12-4 on Thursday night.
It’s Southern Miss’ 11th consecutive win, its longest streak since 2010 and tied for the fifth-longest in school history.
Southern Miss (33-16-1, 17-10 Conference USA) also assured itself of at least the No. 4 seed in next week’s C-USA Tournament, which it’ll host. It can get as high as the No. 2 seed by sweeping Middle Tennessee (30-23, 19-9).
Southern Miss trailed 1-0 in the fifth inning Thursday, but that changed in a hurry.
Roussel led off with a solo home run to tie the game, and an unearned run gave the Golden Eagles the lead. Scott then hit a three-run homer to left field for a 5-1 lead.
It was Scott’s fourth home run of the season and extended his hitting streak to 18 games.
Middle Tennessee cut it to 5-4 in the eighth, but Southern Miss scored seven runs in the top of the ninth to put it on ice.
Roussel had an RBI double in the inning, Matt Durst singled in a pair of runs, and Taylor Braley had an RBI single.
Cody Carroll (5-4) slowed three runs, only one earned, in six innings to get the win. He allowed six hits, walked one and struck out five.
Alcorn State 13, Alabama A&M 3
Earl Burl III, Wallace Rios and Ashton Lewis drove in three runs apiece, and Alcorn State (16-40) used a pair of five-run rallies to eliminate Alabama A&M (26-31) from the SWAC Tournament in New Orleans.
Alcorn will play top-seeded Texas Southern in another elimination game today at noon.
Jackson State 10, Prairie View 1
Sam Campbell drove in three runs and scored three more, Tilur Smith and Jovany Felipe each had two hits and scored twice, and Jackson State (31-24) beat Prairie View (15-36) in an elimination game at the SWAC Tournament.
Jackson State was to play Alabama State in another elimination game this morning.
