Construction plans are not finalized, but officials with the Tennessee-based Dollar General Store said the company will open a fifth Vicksburg area store on U.S. 61 North in the future.

“We don’t have any information when construction will start, but it will be a traditional Dollar General,” company spokesman Dan McDonald said. He said the 7,300-square-foot store would employ 6 to 10 people.

Listed as the nation’s largest small box retailer, Dollar General features a variety of items from clothing, health and beauty aids, to household cleaning and pet supplies and food items.

“We have frozen and refrigerated food products and candies and snacks and canned goods and vegetables, and frozen meals,” McDonald said. “What we don’t have in a traditional Dollar General is fresh produce and meats. There is a significant amount of grocery items, condiments, peanut butter, eggs and milk. That’s the stuff we specialized in — the stuff you need and replenish on a regular basis.”

Founded in 1939, Dollar General has 11,800 stores in 43 states, with 387 stores in Mississippi. Four of those are in Vicksburg: U.S. 61 South, Mississippi 27, Clay Street and Pemberton Square Boulevard.
