Vicksburg foursome struggles at State Am

Vicksburg’s foursome wasn’t so fearsome Thursday in the opening round of the Mississippi State Amateur Championship.

Of four golfers from the city competing in the event at the Country Club of Jackson, only Gabriel Riveros was among the top 40 on the leaderboard. The rising St. Aloysius senior made just one birdie in his round but was otherwise steady and shot a 3-over par 75 to tie for 40th place, eight shots off the lead.

John Caldwell shot a 5-over 77 and was 10 shots back in a tie for 57th place. Channing Curtis shot 78 and was tied for 73rd, and Parker Rutherford shot 80 and was tied for 92nd.

Vicksburg natives Barry Hassell and Paul Loyacano, Jr., shot 74 and 75, respectively.

The top 60 and ties after today’s second round will make the cut at the 72-hole tournament. Caldwell was right on the cut line, as were 18 other players in the 120-man field.

The top of the leaderboard was just as crowded. Eight players were within three shots of the lead.

Wilson Furr of Jackson, Olive Branch’s Braden Thornberry, and Starkville’s Noah Goldman were tied for the lead after all of them shot 67 in the first round.

Easton Key and Robert T. Oakley were one shot back, while Griffin Agent and two-time State Amateur champion Steve Wilson were two back at 69.

Defending champion Nick Beale opened with a 76 and was tied for 50th place.

Caldwell and Curtis both started red hot during their morning rounds.

Caldwell made three birdies on his first five holes to briefly take the lead. After three pars, however, he made a 5 on the par-4 ninth hole for the first of five bogeys in the last 10 holes. He also double-bogeyed the 16th to finish 6-over par on the back nine, after shooting the first nine holes in 1-under par.

Curtis’ bad day started on the fifth hole.

After opening with two pars and back-to-back birdies, he went bogey-bogey on Nos. 5 and 6, made double bogey on Nos. 8 and 12, and added two more bogeys for good measure. Curtis didn’t have a birdie after the fourth hole.

Rutherford, who teed off just before 1 p.m., also started strong before faltering in an odd round in which he had four birdies, four double bogeys, and four regular bogeys.

Rutherford sandwiched birdies on Nos. 1 and 3 around a par on the second hole to quickly move to 2-under.

He then gave both shots back with a double bogey on No. 4, bogeyed the sixth and seventh, and made another double bogey on No. 8 to make the turn at 4-over par.

He did birdie the par-5 11th hole and the 17th hole, but bogeyed the 10th and 12th holes, then doubled both the 15th and 16th to negate those highlights.
