When you walk outside the location of 2639 Washington Street, you really don’t see much.
It’s an old brick building painted light blue that looks like it’s been around for a long time. According to co-owners Larry Davis and Shawn Davis, the building had been vacant for over 10 years and used to be a dry cleaners and a hair salon at one time.
The idea of “The Breakfast Club” started with Shawn Davis, a Vicksburg native, and how she used to work at home and in coffee shops and realized that was something missing from her hometown.
“I would get really hungry in coffee shops around 11 o’clock and I realized that there was no place where I could get Internet, food and breakfast,” Shawn Davis said. “After that, we came up with the idea of Vicksburg’s only independent breakfast and brunch spot.”
The Breakfast Club opened Easter weekend and has been a local success ever since.
Both Larry and Shawn Davis have had a passion for food and cooking ever since they married 11 years ago. They would record their cooking sessions like they had their own TV show and had a vision that cooking would take them somewhere in the future.
When you walk inside The Breakfast Club, it’s a very modern and organic scene that the people of Vicksburg aren’t used to. The walls are painted black and silver and is designed like a restaurant you would see in a big city like New York or Chicago.
The inspiration for the design came from Larry Davis, who lived in Los Angeles and Chicago for a good portion of his life and associates himself as a Chicago native more than anything else.
“It’s totally organic to be completely honest,” Larry Davis said. “I wanted to bring a taste of Los Angeles and Chicago to a place with a Vicksburg feel.”
The inspiration for the menu comes from food they have seen all across the country. The Chicken and Waffles comes from Roscoe’s chicken and waffles in Los Angeles, the tamales comes from Mississippi tamales and the rest of the menu comes from their travels.
The highest selling item on the menu are the pancakes, which Larry Davis thinks almost doubles the sell of any other food item on the menu.
“I’ve been told many times by customers and friends that we have the best pancakes in Vicksburg,” Larry Davis said. “It’s pretty special to hear.”
The pancakes don’t look like regular pancakes as they are more thick and fluffy than usual, which makes them taste better than other pancakes.
“When I think of a stack of pancakes, it should be a stack,” Larry Davis said. “They’re not flat by any means and they have some fluff to them.”
While the pancakes sell the most by a significant margin, the second highest selling item is the shrimp and grits. The popular southern dish is made with fresh ground grits from South Carolina and topped with chopped up peppers. The combination of pancakes and shrimp and grits makes a trip to The Breakfast Club worth it.
Having three kids and owning a restaurant can be taxing for some, but the way Larry and Shawn Davis have operated The Breakfast Club makes it completely joyful.
“It’s been interesting. It’s a lot more juggling,” Shawn Davis said. “I just wanted to make sure that we ran the restaurant and the restaurant doesn’t run us. Closing at two helps us a lot with our kids.”
The Vicksburg feel combined with food and designs from all over the country makes The Breakfast Club a unique and great place to grab breakfast or brunch. The Breakfast Club is a great destination for any food lovers in Vicksburg.
