WEEKLY MEETING: Linda Mchann, left, Christine WIlliams and Dinah Lazor meet weekly for a round of golf at Clear Creek Golf Course in Bovina.

It’s not every day you see a group of women in retirement playing 18 holes of golf every Wednesday morning.

That’s what happens on a weekly basis at the Clear Creek Golf Course in Bovina. A group of 14 women going through retirement meet every Wednesday morning to play a full round of golf, depending on the weather.

Even as the temperature reached the mid 90’s Wednesday morning, that didn’t stop these group of strong women from going through their weekly routine.

“This is where you will find all the ladies today. Right under the shade of each tree,” Charlotte Crist, games coordinator of the ladies golf Association said with laughter.

It’s a special camaraderie the group of women have as they ride in their golf carts and joke around as they pass through the summer heat and play a game that they have been playing for a long time.

The group has been active for over 14 years now and is still going strong.

Some of the members have been playing the game since they were kids and some of them just started to keep busy after retirement.

“This is retirement for most of us,” Crist jokingly said. “We enjoy every second playing this game.”

The group participates in tournaments throughout many states during golf season including Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and Louisiana. The proceedings of the tournaments they organize out of state help go to the homeless and those in need.

The local golf tournament at Clear Creek golf course is the Laverne Russell invitational. Russell was the first minority member at Clear Creek who passed away in 2012. The tournament was named after her ever since and it’s something the group looks forward to each year.

“It’s really something that means so much to each of the members that come and play every Wednesday,” Linda Mchann, the president of the Ladies Golf Association said. “It’s one of the best times of the year to play golf for us.”

The sport of golf is a great way to make connections and relationships. The group of ladies who come out every Wednesday morning have built a special bond and share many stories as they meet in the dead heat of summer.

“Each one of us enjoys the friendship and bonds immensely,” Martha Masterson said. “I love the girls I play with and we just have a lot of fun playing golf.”

“Wednesday is ladies day for us,” Mchann said. “We look forward to this each week and we just look forward to a good time.”
