A dream is a wish your heart makes, and while Davion Jackson’s heart may not work the same as everyone else’s, he’s still getting the chance to see his dreams come true — he’s going to Disney World.
Jackson, 4, was diagnosed hypoplastic left heart syndrome at birth, his mother Precious Davis said.
“His cardiologist referred him to Make-A-Wish,” she said. “From the beginning he didn’t think he was going to make it.”
Davis said her son has undergone three open-heart surgeries.
“I told them he loves watching Mickey and everything on Disney, and he’s never been anywhere,” she said. “He loves Mickey Mouse, and I think he’s going to love it.”
Davis, Jackson and the rest of the family will be spending seven days at Disney next month.
“All we’ve known for a whole year of his life was the hospital,” she said. “For him to actually go somewhere to just have fun and not worry about having to see this doctor or that doctor or say ‘No, you can’t do that because you’re too sick,’ — It’s going to be a week for him to just enjoy being a child.”
The Junior Auxiliary did a send-off party and reveal for Jackson Sunday at Beechwood Elementary School, said Melissa Smithhart, recording secretary and Make-A-Wish chair.
“A representative from Make-a-Wish came and spoke to our chapter about getting involved because there were not any volunteers in the Vicksburg-Warren County area,” she said. “Our chapter decided we would like to do this, and we made it one of our projects.”
Smithhart said the JAs work with Make-A-Wish as wish granters.
“They set us up with Davion and gave us his information,” she said. “Jennifer (Grey) and I went and met with him and his family and talked with them to figure out what his wish was, which was to go to Disney.”
Jackson will leave for Disney July 6.
In addition to Make-A-Wish Mississippi and the Vicksburg chapter of Junior Auxiliary other sponsors include Helping Hand Pharmacy, Beechwood Elementary School, Monogram Creations, Bouncy Feet Inflatables and Vicksburg Intermediate School, which raised $1,250 from a fun run.
