The man with the coolest name in politics is returning to his hometown to speak during the July Vicksburg Warren County Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

Secretary of State and Vicksburg native Delbert Hosemann will be the speaker July 15 at the Vicksburg Convention Center.

“I’m proud of the fact that he’s a state leader, and he’s from Vicksburg,” director of the chamber Jane Flowers said. “I don’t know that a lot of people know that.”

Hosemann was born in Vicksburg and attended St. Aloysius High School before he received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1969 from Notre Dame University. He went on to obtain his law degree from the University of Mississippi in 1972.

Hosemann was elected Secretary of State in 2007, when he took advantage of his unusual name in order to gain name recognition.

A series of commercials showed an elderly woman talking about the good things he would do if elected, meanwhile forgetting his name as he tried to correct her. She typically used similar names such as Gilbert, Albert, Philbert, Dilbert, and Herbert.

Since then, various public service messages, such as a reminder to go vote during election season, have included this format, the woman talking about the importance of voting, then mispronouncing Hosemann’s name, he would then correct her and continue the reminder.

Hosemann is expected to speak about the things he’s accomplished since taking office in 2008.

“I know the things he’s done has affected us, for example everything is electronic now and they send out alerts and messages electronically now,” Flowers said.

“There not just going to hold your hand now, everything is coming to you via email.”

“He’s changed the website and streamlined and modernized the office to make it run more effeciently.”
