Two inmates who escaped the Hinds County Jail in Raymond earlier this week were captured near Oak Ridge Road and U.S. 61 North after a high-speed chase Friday.
Montreal Damon Anderson, 25, and John Rollins, 23, were captured after wrecking a stolen Ford F-150 at a former used car lot on U.S. 61 North and Oak Ridge Road, Sheriff Martin Pace said.
“They were originally transported to the Warren County Jail. Agents from the U.S. Marshal’s fugitive task force picked them up and they have been transported back to the Hinds County Jail,” Pace said.
Calls to Hinds County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Othor Cain were not returned Friday.
The men had been on the lam since Monday when they, and two other men, broke out of the troubled jail in Raymond before a late-night bed check. Hinds County Sheriff Tyrone Lewis has said the escape is under investigation, but no details of how the four men fled have been released. Lewis has described the escape as “prearranged and preplanned.”
Anderson was in jail on charges of receiving stolen property, and Rollins was jailed on charges of auto theft and false pretense.
At about 1:30 p.m. Friday, the F-150 was reported stolen from a gas station in Clinton by two men believed to be the jail escapees, Pace said.
“The two suspects stole a Ford F150 from Obie’s Chevron, 6oo Hwy 80W, in Clinton, a witness called 911 and a BOLO was put out on the description of the vehicle,” Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Eric Henry said.
Inside the vehicle were a .357-caliber pistol and the owner’s golden retriever. The gun was recovered when the two escapees were arrested and the dog is believed to have been abandoned in the Clinton area, Pace said.
About an hour after the truck was stolen, the vehicle was spotted.
“Cpl. Kervin Stewart with the MHP was in the Bolton area on Interstate 20 when he saw the vehicle. He got behind the vehicle, called for backup and a high-speed chase ensued,” Henry said.
Police radio traffic indicates the chase reached speeds upwards of 100 miles per hour.
“It was a good effort on the part of multiple agencies that were able to coordinate a response to assist trooper Stewart and minimize the risk to the public,” Pace said.
Warren County deputies, Vicksburg Police and Constable Glenn McKay blocked U.S. 61 North before the escapees exited from the interstate. At Oak Ridge Road, the truck apparently attempted to turn east but lost control after hitting a patch of gravel. The truck struck an embankment and both airbags deployed.
“Two individuals jumped out and ran on foot,” Pace said.
One suspect was arrested by Stewart in a field near where the truck wrecked, and the other was arrested by Pace after attempting to hide in a building at the vacant car lot. That suspect was apparently bitten by a Vicksburg Police Deparment K-9.
